GPA Calculator
What is a GPA Calculator?
Your grade point average (GPA) is a number that summarizes your academic performance, and it matters for scholarships, graduate school admissions and some jobs. A GPA calculator turns your letter grades and credit hours into a GPA on the standard 4.0 scale.
Select a letter grade for each course and enter the credit hours (a typical course is 3-4 credits). The calculator weights each grade by its credits, sums the grade points, and divides by total credits to give your semester GPA. Use it before midterms to see exactly what you need.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is GPA calculated?
Each letter grade carries points on a 4.0 scale (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0), with plus/minus adjustments. Multiply each grade's points by its credit hours, sum them all, then divide by the total credits. Courses worth more credits count more toward your GPA.
What is a good GPA?
For most purposes, a 3.0 (B average) is solid, 3.5+ is strong for graduate school and many scholarships, and 3.8+ is competitive for top programs. Different schools and employers weigh GPA differently - check specific requirements.
Do plus and minus grades affect GPA?
Yes. On most 4.0 scales, A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B- is 2.7, and so on. Some schools also have an A+ worth 4.3, and weighted courses (honors, AP, IB) may be worth more. This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale.
