What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a quick screening tool that relates your weight to your height. It is used worldwide to categorize weight status and to flag potential health risks at the population level.
Enter your height and weight, and the calculator computes your BMI and category: underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese. It also shows the healthy weight range for your height. BMI is a starting point - it does not measure body fat directly and can misclassify muscular people.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is BMI calculated?
BMI = weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared (kg/m²). For example, a 70 kg person who is 1.75 m tall has a BMI of 70 / 1.75² = 22.9, which is in the normal range.
What is a healthy BMI?
A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal for most adults. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25-29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese. For older adults and certain ethnic groups, slightly different cutoffs are sometimes used.
Is BMI accurate?
BMI is accurate at the population level but imperfect for individuals: it does not distinguish fat from muscle, so athletes can show a high BMI while being lean. It also does not show where fat is stored. Use it alongside waist measurement or body fat percentage for a fuller picture.
